HiCAD 2011 - New in Steel Engineering (3-D SE)
Fit and Process Beams + Profiles
- A new part type, the so-called Elongated plate, is now available in Steel Engineering. This part combines the properties of beams and plates and can be processed by Steel Engineering functions for beams and/or for plates.
- Groups of Steel Engineering plates, such as welded plate I-profiles, plate box profiles, or plate cross-profiles with constant cross-section , can now be fitted via the Multi-part standard beams function. These can be changed with the processing functions for beams, while the individual plates of the group will retain their Steel Engineering part character in the process.
- Beams and profiles can also be exchanged via the API.
- The following tables have been replaced in Version 2011:

- The Notch with LogiKal function can now be found on the Metal Engineering tab.
- Elongated plates or multi-part standard beams can now also be added to / replaced for beams and profiles. To do this, select Steel Engineering > Further functions > Others
> Exchange orAdd.(SP1)
- It is now also possible to unbend curved beams.(SP1)
- When deriving gratings from sketches, you can now change the orientation of bearing bars, by identifying one edge or two points. The bearing bar orientation can also be changed subsequently. (SP1)
Classification according to Type of use
HiCAD uses the Type of use attribute for the classification of parts - especially for civil engineering. To assign a type of use select Properties > Part attributes in HiCAD. In this way you can, for example, define parts as columns, girders, transoms, etc. The different types of use are managed via the Catalogue Editor, namely in the catalogue Factory standards > Type of use. For civil engineering, the ISD provides several predefined catalogues and tables. Extensive information on Types of use and their management can be found in the Online Help for the Catalogue Editor (CATEDITOR.EXE).
Connections + Variants
- The functions for the fitting of joints and connections based on Design Variants, pre-programmed joint functions, stairs and railings functions, and pre-defined assemblies from part type catalogues are now accessed via a new catalogue system which can be accessed via Steel Eng. Connections + Variants > Catalogue.
- Boltings can now be displaced in horizontal direction during the fitting of frame corners.
- You can now select for the angle connections IW 305 and IG 308 whether you want to fit only the left or only the right angle profile.
- You can now also select an uneven number for vertical rows of bolts for all bolted connections.
- Cross-bracings and End plates can now be realised via Design Variants.
- Use the Copy connection function to copy connections in a drawing to other fitting situations.
- In previous versions, non-calculated connection components (such as unfitted stiffeners etc.) were displayed in the ICN as dummy parts. As of HiCAD 2011, these parts will be no longer displayed in the ICN.
- The pre-programmed, fixed connections (macros) for bracings with angles, IW angle connections, IG angle connections, IS front plates and IH front plates are no longer available. Use the Design Variant-based connections instead.
- For some variants, the so-called Rule Editor is now available, a tool that allows the definition of customer-specific configurations in accordance with of Steel Engineering-specific standards and construction guidelines (rules). The dialogue windows of these connections contain a button enabling you to start the Rule Editor.
- You can now insert Free plates (without any references to beams). (SP1)
- Also new is the flexible front plate connection (1320). This connection can be made to webs and flanges.
Stairs and Railings
- Stairs and railings can be fitted via the new catalogue system.
- Vertical ladders can now be configured in only a few steps - in accordance with the guidelines defined in the industrial standards DIN 18799 (e.g. automatically created landings) and DIN EN ISO 14122-4. The utilisation of customer-specific parts for stiles, rungs or other components is also possible.
Workshop Drawings
The workshop drawing functionality has been significantly enhanced.
- Assemblies can be aligned in processing or fitting position.
- Sheet metal parts can be considered in workshop drawings.
- Drawing parameters can either be accessed via the corresponding dialogue or loaded from a configuration file.
- You can now also display part environments, with flexible parameters for the representation.
- AutoLabeling ensures an optimally arranged, collision-free placing of the designation tags close to the corresponding parts. This means that collisions (overlaps) of annotations, item numbers or dimensionings are prevented.
- The enhanced automatism for workshop drawing creation -in particular the accelerated Hidden Line calculation and the increased designation tag creation performance- enables time savings of up to 50 percent.
- When creating workshop or detail drawings you can now also remain in the created drawing instead of automatically switching back to the original drawing. (SP1).
- In workshop drawings, part annotations can also be created in the axonometric view. (SP1).
Management / Drawing Tools
- In addition to the setting options offered by the 3-D Grid function, you can use the Grid annotation
function to individually annotate the axes of a Steel Engineering grid.
- You can now insert corresponding symbols for the identification and annotation of system triangles.
- Use the Multi-part standard beams function to create groups of Steel Engineering plates, e.g. such as welded plate I-profiles, plate box profiles, or plate cross-profiles with constant cross-section.
- The Itemisation dialogue window has been redesigned. Among other things, the Transfer product structure to DB has been removed.
- In the Steel Engineering Settings, the DAST Connections tab is no longer available....
- The options for Slots in the Dimensioning settings have been expanded. These can now also be dimensioned via their centre point.
- If desired, you can take bend and roll radii of standard beams in simplified representation into account as allowance for exact weight calculation. This can be done via the corresponding setting option in the STB_Parameter.DAT file in the HiCAD SYS directory: Switch the setting for --> Weight calculation to 0. (SP1).
