General Notes on Dependent Parts

Dependent parts can be regarded as a special form of referenced parts. In contrast to referenced parts, however, dependent parts are synchronized in only one direction.

This can be useful if, for instance, you need to modify a part to enable its mounting, e.g. by applying bores to it. Referenced parts would also apply the bores in other model drawings, which is not the case when you use them in a dependent assembly. Of course it would be possible to load the part into the drawing as a non-referenced part, but in this case changes to parts referring to this part would no longer be automatically taken over either.

In such situations the use of referenced parts is recommended. These take over all changes that are applied to their original part but, conversely, do not transfer changes that are applied to themselves to the original part. This ensures that the original part remains always unchanged.

There are 2 functions that can generate dependent parts:

• Dependent part - Inserts a copy of a part from a model drawing.
• Dependent assembly - Replaces an assembly in the model drawing with a dependent copy of the assembly, complete with its sub-parts.
