Winding Stairs - Parameters
"Civil Engineering" docking window" > Steel Engineering > Stairs+Railings > Stairs
On the Winding stairs tab, define the stair parameters. These are:
- the height above datum for the stair start, the stair end and the unfinished floor
- the stair type
- the type of stair start and stair end,
- the stringer and step type,
- specifications for the stairwell as well as for the tread supports, stringers and steps.
The following description uses the depicted sketch as a stairwell.
- Height
above datum
Enter the values for the stair start and the stair end. If you want to use a specific floor structure for which the unfinished floor needs to be taken into account, enter this value as well. The values for the stair start and the stair end determine the flight length. This is the dimension of first step front edge to last step front edge. - Stair
type and Stair start/end
Winding stairs offer a choice between four different stair types which you select by activating the relevant option.
From left to right: stairs with 1 tread support, stairs with 2 tread supports, side stringer stairs, open stringer stairs
There are two different variants for both the stair start and the stair end. The currently active variant is displayed as a coloured symbol.
- Stringer
and Step type
You select the stringer type here. The stringer is the component of a staircase that bears the steps and bounds therun to the side. You then define the dimensions of the stringer via the selection list which you activate by clicking the button on the right. You choose the step type and the size of the step in the same way. Possible step types are plates and grating steps from the Standard Part catalogue Steel Eng. Standard Parts > Grating steps > DIN 24531. - Stairwell,
tread supports, stringers and steps
Here, you define the distances between stringers and steps, the nose overhang, the offset at the first and last steps etc. These include, in particular:
Stairwell
- Distance between inner edge and step (1)
- Distance between outer edge and step (2)
- Offset at the stair start (3) and at the stair end (4)
Tread supports
- Distance between tread support upper edge and step lower edge (5)
- Distance between step front edge and tread support front edge (6)
- Outer distance (7)
Step nose overhang (8)
Stringers
- Direct distance from the lower edge of a step to the lower stringer border (A1)
- Direct distance from the upper edge of a step to the upper stringer border (A2, stringer step, from the side)
- Distance of the outer edge of a stringer from the outer edge of a step (outer distance, stringer step, open)
Parameters for stairwell, tread support
and step

After specifying all required parameters, choose OK to exit the Winding stairs tab. Then identify the first step and the last step of the stairwell.
