As for splines, weights are the homogenizing factors for freeform surfaces.
Increasing the weight of a point lying on the de Boor polygon causes an approximation of the B-spline and the de Boor polygon. B-spline surfaces with weights ≠ 1 automatically become NURB surfaces.
