Actual Surface Area of Assembly (3-D)

Actual surface area of assembly

Use this function to calculate the actual surface area of assemblies. You select this function by right-clicking an assembly and selecting Properties > ... .

When you call the function, the following dialogue window will be displayed.

HiCAD will calculate the surface area of the selected assemblies - including all sub-parts. Not considered will be all planar, parallel surfaces, the distance between which is smaller than the Distance tolerance specified in the dialogue window. In this way, double surface (contact surfaces) can be excluded from the calculation. This makes sense, for example, if you want to calculate the surface area that is relevant for galvanizing processes or similar.

Enter the desired distance tolerance in the same-named field. If you now click the Preview button, HiCAD will highlight the surfaces in the drawing that will not be considered for the calculation. When you close the window with OK, the calculated value will be assigned as an attribute to the assembly, and will be saved together with the assembly.

The calculation will take place in the unit that was set in the Configuration Editor at System settings > Miscellaneous > Unit of measurement. The transfer to HELiOS takes place in the unit that was set at System settings > Miscellaneous > Unit for measurement for surface areas.

If subsequent changes are applied to the assembly or its sub-parts, the calculated result will become invalid and the value will be reset to 0.0.

Please note:

The value will be reset to 0 as soon as a change affecting the weight/surface area is applied to the assembly.
